• Single late tulips have been grown for many years to provide late colour after most other kinds have finished flowering
• Queen of Night is probably the best known of the dark tulips, and is most distinctive with its deep maroon petals which are almost black in some lights, and have a velvety sheen
• Queen of Night Tulip has single cup shaped flowers and looks most effective planted with oranges, pinks, or other plum coloured tulips
